In the Candidate's Words

Iraq

“I am deeply concerned that the course of action that we are presently embarking upon with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to win the war against terrorism.”

  Other Foreign Policy Issues

  Climate Change/Energy

“I will be doing everything I can to try to understand how to best use the honor and recognition of this award as a way of speeding up the change in awareness and the change in urgency. It truly is a planetary emergency, and we have to respond quickly.”

***

“We face a planetary emergency. Just three days ago, as you know, the scientists reported that the melting of the north polar ice cap was 10 times faster than expected. It's fallen off a cliff in the words of one of these scientific experts, and it really is an emergency.”

***

Al Gore said “not to single out cars and trucks” in a statement before two House subcomittees. They are only a “slice of the problem.” Gore proposes some steps that might stave off the environmental catastrophe. First, freeze carbon dioxide emissions immediately, and then reduce emissions by 90% by 2050. Second replace taxes on employment and production with taxes on pollution, particularly carbon dioxide – a carbon tax. Third, use public money to help the poor transition to a low-carbon lifestyle. Fourth, join a new global treaty to cut emissions and put it into effect by 2010, two years earlier than current plans. Fifth, build no more new coal-fired power plants, unless they can capture and sequester the carbon they emit.

Healthcare

“What I propose is to start by ensuring every child in America would have health insurance by the end of the next President's term.”
